English
This term we are busy focusing on biographies. We are continuing to try and use a range of punctuation, adjectives and conjunctions. In Year 1 we are working really hard on our handwriting and ensuring it is all the same size with ascenders and descenders.
Phonics
In Year 1 we are continuing to have daily phonics and we are working really hard on applying our phonics sounds to our reading to make our reading more fluent and expressive. Reading every day is so important, so continue to ‘strive for 5’ at home. Just a reminder that the phonics screening week is quickly approaching – w/c. 9th June 2025, so please do not take any holidays during this week.
Maths
Another busy term. This term we are focusing on multiplication and division, so keep up with the practise of the 2, 5 and 10 times tables., fractions, geometry, place value within 100, so keep practising number recognition and the correct formation of all the numbers to 100. As well as that we will also be learning about measurement: time and money.
Topic – Geography focused
This half term we are looking at ‘Where would you rather live in Ellesmere Port or Australia?’ Within this we will focus on the geographical difference between the 2 contrasting countries as well as some of the beliefs and cultures of Australia.
RE
We will be exploring ‘baptism’ and why baptism is so important and then we finish the term with our ‘creation’ topic.
Science
This term we will finishing off our science unit: ‘animals including humans,’ and are very excited to use Lily and Nutty (our stick insects) to help support this.
Art/DT
It’s time to get our hands dirty working with clay in our DT project. We will learn how to roll an even slab of clay by using a rolling pin on top of two wooden batons and join two pieces of clay so they won’t fall apart e.g. by roughing both surfaces with a toothbrush. Within this we will make a model in clay for particular purpose. We will also be making dips and dippers!
PE
In PE we will being taking part in House of Dance. We will also focus on using our hands in our ‘hands 2’ topic, as well as using rackets and balls and games for understanding.
Music
In Music we will be continuing to learn songs using Makaton in preparation of our summer concert: Friday 18th July 2025, at 2:15pm in our school hall.
Computing
This half term we are continuing to improve our skills of logging onto a computer and Purple Mash. We will be using Purple Mash to explore spreadsheets and animated story books.

Buenos Dias, Buenos Tardes! We will continue to practice our basic greetings in Spanish and also learn colours and numbers to 10.
Heartsmart
Within Heartsmart we are exploring the unit of ‘Fake is a Mistake!’ This unit focuses on the importance of being true to yourself and loving you for you and then we finish the term with ‘No way through isn’t true!’ with a focus on the importance of perseverance.
Trips –
We are so looking forward to our one night residential on Tuesday 1st July!
Other
If your child is attending a sports after-school club, that is on a different day to a PE day, they will need to come in to school wearing their full, named school uniform and their PE kit in a bag.
Toys, teddies, jewellery should not be bought in to school, as children get very upset when they lose things or they get broken.
We are a healthy school, so please only send in one snack for your child for breaktime.
Look on our homework tab for all home learning links to support your child’s learning.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of the Year one team who will be happy to help.
Thank you for your continued support.
