EYFS

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and support to fulfil their potential. A child’s

experience in the early years has a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and

happy childhood is important in its own right and it provides the foundation for children to make

the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.’

Early Years Foundation Stage Profile - Department for Children, Schools and Families 2022

The Early Years Foundation Stage applies to children from birth to the end of the reception year. At Christ Church Primary School children are admitted to reception in the September following their fourth birthday.

Early childhood is the foundation on which children build the rest of their lives. At Christ Church Primary School we greatly value the importance that the EYFS plays in laying secure foundations for future learning and development.

However, we also believe that early childhood is valid in itself as part of life. It is important to view the EYFS as preparation for life and not simply preparation for the next stage of education.

Every child in the Early Years Foundation Stage will access a full and diverse curriculum which challenges and develops them to grow academically, personally and socially.

As spiritual beacons and through our curriculum we are all:

  • Communicators
  • Explorers
  • Readers
  • Believers

In the Early Years Foundation Stage we interweave these drivers in as many ways as possible.

For example:

Communicators- through planned activities and continuous provision children will be given the opportunity to express themselves

Explorers- themes and activities will be based upon the interests of the children, allowing them to become fully immersed in their learning.  Trips and visitors will encourage children to explore the world around them

Reading- children will begin their Reading journey by taking part in daily phonics sessions to develop the necessary decoding skills.  They will be encouraged to develop a love of reading through “Authors of the Term” and access to a variety of rich and enjoyable texts.

Believers- children will be exposed to a range of activities allowing them to develop perseverance and resilience.  Supported by key adults within the setting, they will be encouraged to take risks and become independent learners.

Through these drivers and the delivery of the EYFS curriculum we want our children to have a love of learning. We want them to have fun, broad experiences which will enrich their life.
