Autumn Term
Welcome to Autumn Term in Y6.
We have an exciting term ahead in Year 6, filled with fun and important learning opportunities. The children will be exploring new topics across the curriculum, developing their skills, and preparing for the challenges of their final year in primary school. From inspiring books that spark creativity, to hands-on projects and practical problem-solving, it promises to be a busy and rewarding half term.
English
This half term, we are using the book King Kong to inspire our writing. The children will be exploring different styles of writing and learning how to make their work more exciting and accurate. They will be practising using a wider range of punctuation, building varied sentences, and planning their ideas carefully before writing. We will also be encouraging them to choose powerful vocabulary, link their ideas smoothly across paragraphs, and use description to create atmosphere. As part of the process, the children will be editing and improving their work to make it the best it can be.
Shared Reading
In shared reading, we are enjoying The Explorer by Katherine Rundell. Alongside reading the story together, the children will be practising their comprehension skills, with a focus on answering SATs-style questions. This will help them develop confidence in understanding a text deeply, explaining their ideas clearly, and using evidence from the book to support their answers.
Maths
In maths this half term, we are focusing on building a strong understanding of place value and the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). The children will be developing confidence with larger numbers, practising efficient methods of calculation, and applying their skills to problem-solving and reasoning activities.
Topic
We are learning about Central America. We will be exploring its location, climate, and geographical features, as well as finding out about the people, cultures and wildlife that make this part of the world unique.
Science
In science, we are studying evolution and inheritance. The children will learn how living things have changed over time, how animals and plants adapt to their environments, and how characteristics are passed down through generations
RE
In RE, we are looking at The Big Story in the Bible and thinking about how different events link together and what they mean for Christians today.
DT/Art
In DT, our focus is on seasonal foods. The children will learn where ingredients come from, why eating seasonally is important, and will have the chance to design and make a delicious, warming soup.
PE
In PE, the children will be developing creativity and coordination through dance and will also be working on their swimming skills.
